Relief rice sold in black market, BNP leader arrested

Noakhali Correspondent: The District Intelligence Police (DB) has arrested a person as a suspect for allegedly hoarding the relief rice supplied to the Rohingya camp in Bhasanchar Rohingya camp in Dwip Upazila of Noakhali and selling it in the black market.

The arrested Jamal Uddin Gazi (45) died of Hajipur village of East Charbata Union of Subarnachar Upazila. Noor Islam son and former general secretary of District Farmers Party. Currently, he is a candidate for the post of president of Subarnachar Upazila BNP.

He was arrested from Janata Bazar Ghat adjacent to Bhumihin Bazar in Harani Union No. 1 of Hatia Upazila around 2.30 pm on Sunday (November 6).

Locals complained that on October 19, relief rice was brought from Bhasanchar Rohingya camp to Chairman Ghat of Subarnachar through black market for sale by trawlers. Chowkidar Karim then informed the police when people got suspicious while loading the truck. The police immediately took the trucks and the people involved in the transport along with the signs into their custody. At that time, BNP leader Gazi was accused of selling relief rice in the black market. In the last three years, this BNP leader has become rich in crores of rupees by selling Rohingya rice and relief rice in the black market, the local people alleged. A case has been filed against him under the Special Powers Act at Charjabbar police station on October 20.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of Noakhali. Shahidul Islam confirmed the truth of the incident. He said that the arrested Gazi is an absconding accused in multiple cases. The district intelligence police arrested him based on a tip-off. Legal proceedings are pending in this case.
