Dhaka Bureau: Japan has shown interest in expanding investment by expressing satisfaction with the investment environment in Bangladesh. On the other hand, Bangladesh has assured Japan that it will provide all kinds of cooperation from the Bangladesh government to attract and expand Japanese investment.
This issue was discussed at the 5th Bangladesh-Japan Public-Private Joint Economic Dialogue on Tuesday.
According to the schedule, the host country of this year’s economic dialogue is Japan, but considering the global economic situation, this joint economic dialogue is held on the online platform. Basically, the new horizon of the economic relations between the two countries started with the visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, to Japan in 2014, following which a decision was taken to organize the Bangladesh-Japan public-private joint economic dialogue to further strengthen the economic relations between the two countries.
In the meeting, government and private parties gave statements on Japan’s existing investment in Bangladesh and future plans for investment and cooperation on a priority basis in various sectors. At the same time, Bangladesh is informed about the various actions to be taken to expand investment.
Japan was assured on behalf of Bangladesh of all kinds of cooperation from the government of Bangladesh to attract and expand Japanese investment in the country and was informed about the implementation progress of the issues that had previously attracted the attention of Japanese investors in Bangladesh. On the part of Japan, satisfaction was expressed with the activities taken by Bangladesh, and hope was expressed that this progress will continue in the future.
Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister in Dhaka Tofazzal Hossain Mia led the Bangladesh team in this economic dialogue. Governor, Bangladesh Bank, Chairman, National Board of Revenue, Ministry of External Affairs; Ministry of Commerce; Department of Economic Relations; Ministry of Agriculture; Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock; Department of Power: Department of Energy and Mineral Resources; and Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority, and Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority, including Senior Secretary/Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office; Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan; and Director General of the Prime Minister’s Office, participated in the dialogue. As representatives from the private level, the presidents and representatives of various private trade organizations, including FBCCI, BGMEA, and JBCCI, participated.
The participating team from Japan at the Tokyo end was led by Mr. Hirai Hirohide, Vice Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI). Besides Japan’s ambassador to Bangladesh, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) as chairman of the Japan-Bangladesh Committee for Commercial and Economic Co-operation, representatives of other ministries, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and other business representatives, including the head of JICA JETRO Bangladesh Office, participated in the dialogue.
In this dialogue, the Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, and Director General (Executive Cell and Private EPZ), Prime Minister’s Office, presented various policy support and incentive-related government initiatives in the agribusiness and logistics sectors. Besides, Dr. respectively discusses the enormous potential of Japanese investment in the agribusiness and logistics sectors in Bangladesh. FH Ansari, President of ACI Agribusiness Division, and Dr. Two presentations were made by M. Masroor Riaz, President and CEO, Policy Exchange Bangladesh.
Besides, both sides shed light on what needs to be done in the future to expand the business of Japanese investors in Bangladesh and were satisfied with the activities of the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone established on a G2G basis in Araihajar Upazila of Narayanganj. published
At this time, the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority invited Japanese investors to invest in Bangladesh, including the Maheshkhali Economic Zone.
The 5th Bangladesh-Japan Public-Private Joint Economic Dialogue was announced by both sides, who expressed hope that the economic relations between the two countries would gain a new dimension through the upcoming visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to Japan.
