Jessore Correspondent: A video of a member of Narikelbaria Union Parishad (UP) being publicly beaten up in Jessore’s Bagharpara has gone viral on Facebook.
The victim UP member Zahid Hasan is a member of Ward Number One of Narikelbaria Union of Upazila and the son of deceased Wahab Biswas of Balrampur Village.
In protest of this incident, 11 UP members of that union held a press conference at the Bagharpara Press Club on Sunday, April 9, at noon. Besides, they also gave a memorandum to the upazila executive officer.
Earlier on Saturday (April 8) afternoon, a beating incident took place near Narikelbaria market in the upazila. That night, the victim, Zahid Hasan, filed a case in Bagharpara police station, mentioning the names of five people.
In the one minute and eight second video that went viral, it was seen that Jabuk Zahidul Islam Tutul, a local wearing a white T-shirt, severely beat UP member Zahid Hasan with a tree branch and Shamim Hasan, wearing a black T-shirt. At one point, he fell to the ground. When some local women tried to stop them, they were also pushed and assaulted.
In the press conference, Rabiul Islam, member of Ward No. 8 of Narikelbaria Union, read a written statement on behalf of UP member Zahid Hasan.
It is said in the speech that the attack happened with the help of local UP chairman Bablu Kumar Sahar. The attackers are drug addicts identified as Shapla, Tutul, and Touhidul. They are the chairman’s greedy army. The UP members were having a dispute with the attackers over various issues. As a result, it is said that the attack was carried out on Saturday afternoon.
UP members Masud Qaiser, Shamchur Rahman, Ferdous Khan Sohag, Hafizur Rahman, Adam Ali, Sohrab Hossain Mondal, Khaleda Sultana, Hasia Khatun, Reba Khatun, and attack victim Zahid Hasan were present at the press conference. At this time, Hadiuzzaman Mukul, a member of ward number 7, joined virtually and expressed solidarity.
Regarding the complaint, UP Chairman Bablu Kumar Saha said that the complaint against me is false and baseless. Those involved in this incident are not my people.
Bagharpara Police Station OC Feroz Uddin said that the case has been recorded. The matter is under investigation.
