Dhaka Bureau: The state has filed an application seeking suspension of the bail granted by the High Court to building owner Sohel Rana in the murder case filed in the Rana Plaza collapse and casualties. Soon after this, Sohail Rana’s bail was suspended. On Sunday (April 9), Sohail announced the suspension of Rana’s bail. Earlier in the day, on the same day, Advocate Sufia Khatun applied to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division, seeking suspension of bail.

The High Court granted bail to Sohail Rana on April 6. As a result, there is no obstacle to his release from prison, the lawyers said. The High Court bench of Justice Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Shahed Nooruddin announced the ruling on his bail.

Advocate Kamrul Islam heard the bail application in court. Earlier, the High Court issued a ruling asking why Sohel Rana, the owner of the building, should not be granted bail in the murder case filed in the Rana Plaza collapse and casualties on March 1 last year.

It should be noted that on April 24, 2013, 1,117 bodies were recovered from the collapse of the Rana Plaza building. Later, 19 others died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. Two thousand four hundred and thirty-eight people were rescued alive from the rubble. Out of the recovered bodies, 844 were handed over to the relatives of the victims. The unidentified bodies of 291 people were buried in the Jurain cemetery after DNA testing. Among the rescued survivors, 1,524 people were injured. Among them, 78 people were seriously injured and paralyzed.

The day after the Rana Plaza collapse, SI Ali Ashraf of Savar police station filed a case of negligent death. 21 people, including Sohail Rana, were accused in that case. Apart from this, Shiuli Akhter, wife of garment worker Jahangir Alam, filed another case in the court, calling the death of Rana Plaza’s collapse murder. The CID merged it with the case of negligent death on the orders of the court. On June 1, 2015, CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Vijay Krishna Kar filed a charge sheet against 41 people accused in the incident. On July 18, 2016, the court framed charges against building owner Sohel Rana and 41 others.
