Khagrachari Correspondent: A disabled youth named Mohammad Sumon was injured in the collapse of the pillar of the house within a year of the construction of the shelter project given by the honorable prime minister during the Mujib years. Suman, the injured youth, alleged that the substandard work of the contractor and the lack of supervision by the upazila administration are questioning the gift given by the prime minister in Mujib year. At present, to prevent the house from collapsing, instead of pillars, bamboo has been placed at that place.
This incident took place in the West Bolipara area of Union No. 1 of Ramgarh Upazila of Khagrachari District.
After going to the ground, it is known that a pillar of the house collapsed on March 16. Suman’s right hand was severely broken due to this. Suman is currently completely destitute after spending 70 thousand rupees to meet the medical expenses. Suman’s family is spending days without eating a single meal, along with their wife and children, despite being able to continue the treatment with the help of neighbors. To prevent the house from collapsing, the collapsed pillars are replaced with bamboo poles. Suman, a disabled auto-rickshaw driver, is spending his days in a broken home in extreme uncertainty with his wife and children and the fear of losing his life.
The victim, Mohammad Sumon, complained that the contractor was using very low-quality equipment in the construction of the house. No rod is used in the pillar. Sand has been used instead of cement in many parts of the house. When asked the reason for using substandard equipment, the contractor used to complain about the price increase of the materials. Seeing the poor condition of the house construction, 16 sacks of cement, masonry supplies, and rods were bought with the money received from the public representatives and neighbors, but the contractor left the house construction work incomplete. According to the design of the house, wall lining and a bathroom were supposed to be provided, but nothing was. The contractor even leaves the tin in the house incomplete.
He also complained that no one from the upazila administration came to supervise during the construction. The contractor did the job in a cynical manner. Later, he went home after completing the housework with installments again on his own responsibility. From the construction of the house until its collapse, no one from the concerned community came to see it.
Upazila Parishad Chairman Biswa Pradeep Kumar Karbari said Suman was born handicapped. I personally helped him when his previous house burned down. He urged the administration to rebuild the house.
General Secretary of Ramgarh Upazila Awami League Kazi Nurul Alam Alamgir expressed his anger and said that the gift given by the leader Sheikh Hasina is being wasted due to some such contractors. He requested the administration’s quick intervention.
In this regard, Ramgarh Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Nazrul Islam said, This house was built before I came to this upazila. Very soon, the house will be inspected, and necessary measures will be taken. But he also said that he heard the house collapsing due to the impact of the tomtom.
In this regard, Ramgarh Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamata Afrin said that she heard the incident. Efforts will be made to repair the damage, and if complaints are received, action will be taken against all parties involved in this reprehensible act.
Incidentally, in the past, when Suman’s clay house was burned down by fire, a shelter house was given to him on his ancestral land with the help of the concerned people of the immediate upazila. However, the contractor left without completing the construction work, using low-quality bricks, cement, and sand in the construction of the house.
