Chandpur Correspondent: A sudden storm in Hajiganj of Chandpur has caused extensive damage to several houses, and one person has been killed. On Monday (March 27) around 3 p.m., the storm passed over the villages of South Raichon and Noada, Randhunimura, and Arakhal under the municipality of Barakul East Union of the upazila.
The deceased Md. Shafiullah (80), a resident of Toragarh village, is a sailor by profession.
Locals said that on Monday afternoon, a sudden storm started blowing. Within five minutes, at least 20 residential houses were destroyed, including several houses in Dakshin Raichon and Noada, Randhunimura, Mokimabad village and Arakhal village of Barakul East Union of the upazila and over half a hundred trees were uprooted.
At the time, a man named Shafiulah drowned in the Dakatiya river at Toragad-Barakul Khia Ghat, south of Toragad village and within the municipality’s jurisdiction.Locals took him to the Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead. He is a resident of that village.
Hajiganj Fire Service Senior Station Officer Sajedul Kabir Joardar said that the fallen trees have been removed from the affected area.
Mohammad Zobair Syed, OC of Hajiganj police station, said that the body was handed over to the family without an autopsy as there was no complaint and based on a written application.
The OC said, with the help of police, the fire service, and locals, the uprooted trees and branches on the road have been cleared and the traffic has been normalized.
