Dhaka Bureau: Train movement over Padma Bridge will start this month. Initially, the train will run on the 42-km section of Bhanga-Mawa.

The work of laying five and a half kilometers of rail slab trucks for the main bridge, which is 6.15 kilometers long, has been completed. The progress of the main bridge is 88 percent. And the progress on broken parts is over 92 percent. Remaining movement joints and 750-meter slab trucks on the main bridge are in full swing.

Zahurul Haque, senior engineer of the Padma main bridge and viaduct, said that except for the 750-meter section of the Padma bridge, the railway work of the 42-kilometer section has been completed. Test trains will run over the main bridge this month.

Inspector of Padma Main Bridge and Viaduct Sanjay Chandra Roy said there are eight bridge joint movements in Padma Bridge. Seven of which are the last. The final joint movement is now complete, and the rail will be ready for use this month.

Engineers said that this is the first railway without stones in Bangladesh. Although the cost is high, the future maintenance cost of this durable railroad is not much.

Lokman Hossain, assistant engineer of the Padma main bridge and viaduct, said that although the cost of constructing this railway without stone is high, it will be sustainable. There will be no jolts on this railway. No repair costs at a later date.

The China Railway Engineering Company is working on the Dhaka-Jesore 169-km Padma Bridge rail connection project at a cost of about Tk 40,000 crore.
