Dhaka Bureau: The Ministry of Health has canceled all approvals of Care Medical College located on Mohammadpur Iqbal Road in the capital due to various complaints.
This information was announced in a circular signed by the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Mahbooba Bilkis, on Wednesday (November 2).
The notification informed that due to various problems of Care Medical College, the decision to cancel the activities of this medical college was taken in the meeting of October 23. Because of that, the approval of the college was canceled as per Section-24 of the ‘Private Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges Act, 2022’.
Earlier, the Ministry of Health suspended the admission process of students in the MBBS course of Care Medical College from the academic year 2016-17. But the college authorities filed a writ petition in the High Court and continued the proceedings. The writ petition was withdrawn on July 26.
According to the notification of the ministry, the college authorities have not been able to improve the quality of the college even in the last five years and have failed in conducting academic activities.
Following this, the inspection committee formed by the Department of Health Education visited Care Medical College on June 14. The inspection report shows that the college does not have a sound academic environment. There is a shortage of teachers. Hospitals and colleges do not have their own land. The medical college and the hospital are not located on the same campus, the hospital beds occupy only 10 percent instead of 70 percent.
The notification also said that the college authorities could not fulfill the minimum conditions for running the college as per the Private Medical College Establishment and Management Policy, 2011 (Amended) and the ‘Private Medical College and Dental College Act, 2012’.
According to the Ministry of Health, the college authorities expressed incompetence in the management of the college in the application of the students studying in the institution and in the memorandum letter number 2. After that, the opinion of the Directorate of Health Education was taken in this regard through the memorandum number 2 issued. In view of the opinions and considering the interests of the students, a meeting was held with the principal of Care Medical College and the chairman of the governing body on October 23 under the chairmanship of the secretary. In the meeting, the chairman of the institution said that no student was admitted to MBBS in the academic year 2021-22 due to various deficiencies and problems of the college. They said that they are no longer interested in running the college.
