Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: Queen Mathilde Marie Christine of Belgium, Ambassador of the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), arrived at the Rohingya camp to observe the activities of the United Nations regarding the Rohingyas and to meet the refugee population of this country.
He reached Cox’s Bazar International Airport directly from Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on February 7 around 10 a.m. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shahin Imran, Superintendent of Police of Cox’s Bazar District Police Mahfuzur Rahman, and officials of the Turkish Embassy in Dhaka welcomed the queen at the airport. Earlier on Monday, the Queen of Belgium arrived in Dhaka on a three-day visit and was welcomed by Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.
On the first day of her visit to Bangladesh, Rani Mathilde visited a garment factory called Fakir Apparels Limited in Narayanganj. This garment factory manufactures garments for major international brands. One-third of the factory’s workforce is women, who have participated in women’s empowerment programs through the Gender Equality and Returns Project (GER) and the “Working Mothers” project run by the United Nations International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Queen Mathilde of Belgium spoke to some of the female workers at the factory and visited the childcare facilities.
Reportedly, in partnership with 47 of the world’s leading brands and employers’ associations, the Better Work Program supports 450 factories, benefiting more than 1.25 million workers in Bangladesh. This work contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of achieving gender equality, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and ensuring livelihoods and decent work for all.
