DHAKA BUREAU: Army Chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed said that the Bangladesh Army performs many duties of the government, which are under the civilian administration. The activities which are carried out with the help of civil administration are impossible without the full cooperation of civil administration.

He told reporters after the first session of the last day of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Thursday (January 26).

The meeting was held with the Ministry of Defense and Department of Armed Forces.

Referring to Sasri’s presence in the DC conference, General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed said, I personally came here last time as well, this time too. But I did not send any representative. Attending the District Commissioner’s Conference two years in a row proves how much importance I attach to it.

He said, I believe, the people who play the biggest role in the administration at the field level are the DC. The Army wants to work sincerely with the civil administration to carry out any task given by the government. With the help of the civil administration, the army carries out various activities related to disaster management and nation-building and also carries out many security duties. Everyone praised the role of the army in the last flood. They have praised us in other works as well.

SM Shafiuddin Ahmed said that the current army thinks that the civil administration is more friendly with them (army) than before. We feel much better, more comfortable working with them than before. This is our cultural difference, the army is working the way they are, the civil administration is working the way they are. The objective is the same, but some misunderstandings may occur due to differences in methodology.

“As long as we can eliminate them, maintaining the privacy of our work, I think we will be able to perform what is expected from us by the government and the people of the country.”

When asked about the Myanmar border situation and the role of the army in the upcoming elections, the army chief said that there was no discussion with the district commissioners.

“I gave them this signal clearly, I came personally, the army wants to work sincerely with the civil administration to complete any responsibility given by the government,” said the army chief.
