Own Correspondent: Detective Mohan Mia has to be released from Chittagong Central Jail due to irregularities and corruption. He has been withdrawn from Prison Intelligence Unit and transferred to Barisal GIG Prison Office. After being attached there, he will be posted in the district jail as a general jailer. According to police sources, this punitive action has been taken after the investigation of multiple allegations against Mohan was found to be true.
If a member is inducted into the Prison Intelligence Unit, he can serve for a minimum of eight years. Mohan was removed after serving only two and a half years.
The complaint against Mohan was that before entering the jail, everyone from the senior jail superintendent to the constable used to leave their personal mobile phones outside. The prison guard at the gate searched the body before entering. But the only exception was detective Mohan Mia. This rule was trivial to his power! The prison guard on duty at the prison gate did not have the courage to search Mohan’s body. The arrow of suspicion was directed at Mohan in connection with the recent recovery of banned mobile phones from cells and wards, seizure of drugs and cash from prison cells.
Not only that; As there is a ‘jail road road’ near Jamuna and Halda buildings of the jail, the relatives of the prisoners stand on the road shouting and talking to the prisoners throughout the day. Therefore, the prison authorities have a policy decision not to detain accused residents of Chittagong in Jamuna and Haldar wards. However, Mohan overruled this decision and forced the prisoners of his choice to be kept in the coveted wards of Jamuna and Halda buildings. Not only this, he was always active in trying to monopolize and dominate the government-sanctioned telephone booths inside the prisons. When his relatives came to the jail to see a VIP prisoner, Mohan would instantly bond with them. Instead of meeting for 15 minutes, he used to give illegal opportunity to continue meeting and talking for one to two hours. In this way, the ‘bribery’ business returned to the Chittagong prison with the help of CID Mohan. A prison sergeant and four to five prisoners accompanied Mohan in this work.
Chittagong Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Manjur Hossain said, ‘He was released from Chittagong on January 1 after receiving the order of withdrawal and transfer from the Directorate of Prisons. Now he is attached to Barisal GIG office.’
Emran Hossain Miah of Chittagong Central Jail district said, ‘After joining Chittagong, several complaints about Mohan came to my ears. Take action in that light. Detective Mohan was under strict observation. We are determined to keep prisons corruption-free.’
Denying all the allegations, Mohan Mia said, ‘The accusations of dishonesty and corruption against me are false and fabricated. No prisoners were given favors in exchange of bribes. My friends have made these false accusations. I also responded to the grief that was done to me.’
