Dhaka Bureau: In the current climate policy that the countries of the world are following, there is a fear that the warming will increase by an average of 2.8 degrees Celsius in this century. There has been no progress in meeting the commitments made by governments around the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) released its annual research report on Thursday.
It said that the temperature limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius is now in serious danger of collapse.
The research report that examines the effect of climate change on the temperature, says that the current climate policy followed by the countries of the world will increase the amount of warming in this century. On the other hand, the 27th United Nations Climate Conference (COP-27) is going to be held in Egypt’s Sharm Al-Sheikh from November 6 to 18 this year. The conference will seek to reach a collective commitment to limit global warming to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to keep it within 1.5°C.
According to the UN research report, since last year’s COP-26 climate conference, governments around the world have not made enough progress in their plans to reduce carbon emissions. In this situation, the disaster can only be avoided if the society is transformed urgently. In accordance with the commitment made at the last climate conference, the efforts to reduce carbon emissions have started again, by the year 2030, the emission of greenhouse gases in the world will be reduced by less than 1 percent. However, scientists say that greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced by 45 percent to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, if the climate plans of the governments of various countries are not accelerated, the temperature may increase by 2.8 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, which is 0.1 degrees Celsius higher than last year’s estimate.
Experts say that if warming exceeds 1.5 degrees Celsius, it will have dangerous effects on people around the world. But the world is currently not in a position to keep the temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius. After last year’s natural disasters, this reality has become more evident. If the countries of the world receive financial support and act according to the plan, the temperature can be limited to 2.4 degrees Celsius. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an interview that the world must refocus on climate change or face disaster.
