Dhaka Bureau: The newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Khandkar Golam Farooq said that there is no obstacle for the police to carry out political programs of registered parties. In this case, it is not the job of the police to turn their noses or worry. There will be marches-meetings-gatherings according to the culture of politics. However, if anyone commits a criminal offense in the name of politics, strict legal action will be taken against him. He also promised to organize the traffic system and suppress the militants with a strong hand.
The DMP Commissioner said these things at the Meet the Press organized at the DMP Media Center at Minto Road in the capital on Monday afternoon after taking charge.
Khandkar Golam Farooq said that the work of political parties is to do politics. Our work is about law and order. If someone vandalizes a car in the name of politics, sets fire to a car in the name of politics, cuts trees and blocks the road, then these fall into criminal offences. If you commit a criminal offense, we will strictly suppress and control it. However, as long as a political program does not constitute a criminal offence, we will cooperate with them.
DMP Commissioner said, we have taken various plans to make the police station public-oriented and service-oriented. We are monitoring whether they are running properly or whether people are getting proper services. Also, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station has been instructed to inform every Friday before offering Friday prayers at different mosques that there is no charge for service at the police station. He said, using the experience of 32 years of working life, I will try to ensure the safety of the people of the city.
In response to a question from journalists about drugs, the new commissioner said that drugs can be eradicated in two ways. The methods are to isolate drug addicts and drug dealers and to treat drug addicts and reduce demand. That’s why I will talk to the officials of the Drug Control Department to improve the quality of hospitals in treating drug addicts and increase the number of hospitals.
Khandkar Ghulam Farooq said, due to various reasons, the activity of militants in our country is not decreasing. As a result of the action of our police and people, they were completely calmed down. A few years later they became active again. 24-hour surveillance by the cyber department of the police has been continued to stop their activity. He also said that the work of preserving the information of the tenants from the city residents is continuing to prevent militant activities.
Regarding traffic congestion relief, the police commissioner said that Dhaka city was not developed in a planned way. Because of that, there is traffic jam here due to various reasons. Moreover, several mega projects are underway in the capital, which is also a reason. We are working on how to keep city dwellers traffic free even in this situation. Work will be done to prevent illegal parking on the road. Besides, work is going on whether parking zones can be created at different places.
