Dhaka Bureau: The court ordered BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas to be sent to jail in the Paltan police case of the capital. Police produced them in court on Friday (December 9). Police Inspector Tariqul Islam, the investigating officer of the case, requested to keep them in jail until the investigation of the case is over.
On the other hand, the defense lawyers applied for bail. After the hearing of both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim rejected their bail application and ordered to send them to jail.
Earlier, they were brought to the court from the DB’s office at 4:10 pm on Friday. Pro-BNP lawyers protested in the court premises. They chanted slogans like ‘Khaleda Zia’s release’, ‘Why did the party office shoot?’
Earlier, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party standing committee member Mirza Abbas were arrested by DB.
In this regard, the head of DB Mohammad Harun ar Rashid said, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas were brought for questioning. After interrogation, they were arrested as the informants in the incident of Wednesday (December 7).
BNP leaders and activists clashed with the police in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on the afternoon of December 7. One person was shot and killed. Many were injured. During the raid at the BNP office, rice and pulses, water, cash and explosives were found, police said.
The police filed a case as a plaintiff in the Paltan Model Police Station, accusing 150 to 2000 BNP leaders and activists, including names of 473 people, in the clash.
Among the notable accused in the case are Special Assistant to BNP Chairperson Shimul Biswas, Dhaka Metropolitan North Convener Amanullah Aman, South Convener Abdus Salam, BNP Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Former Organizing Secretary Fazlul Haque Milan, Co-Organizing Secretary Selimuzzaman Salim, Central Publicity Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and member of the National Executive Committee Abdul Quader Bhuiyan Jewel and others.
