The Crime Desk: Police have arrested Akash Chowdhury, a Jamaat-e-Islami worker expelled for kicking a woman during a Democratic Students’ Alliance program in Chittagong. He was arrested in the city’s Kotwali area on Sunday (June 1) afternoon.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Karim said that Akash Chowdhury was arrested based on confidential information. He has been sent to court in a case filed by the police under the Speedy Trial Act.
The Democratic Students’ Alliance announced a program on Wednesday afternoon to protest the acquittal of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam from the death sentence in a case of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. Soon after the program began, the ‘Shahbagh Anti-Oikya’ group brought out a procession there. When the two sides faced off around 3:30 pm, the police tried to remove them. At that time, people from the ‘Shahbagh Anti-Oikya’ group attacked the leaders and workers of the student alliance. 12 people were injured.
The police arrested Obaidur and Selim from the scene of the attack. In this incident, the police filed a case with the Kotwali Police Station, naming the two arrested under the Speedy Trial Act and accusing 20 unidentified people. It said that the accused, armed with country-made weapons, practiced in the area, creating panic, terror, and obstruction of traffic on the road.
Meanwhile, a video of the attack has been circulated on social media, Facebook. In the video, a man is seen kicking two people, including a woman, from behind. The person who was seen kicking is named Akash Chowdhury.
In the 15-second video, it is seen that after the attack, the leaders and activists of the Democratic Student Alliance took shelter under a building next to the Press Club. A policeman was also seen there. The man avoided the eyes of the police and went behind the leaders and activists. Standing there, he suddenly kicked one of them. Then he turned and kicked another woman again.
Earlier, Akash Chowdhury was accused of attacking a Sunni program in Muradpur in the city.
On the night of May 30, a statement signed by Assistant Secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan City Mohammad Ullah announced the expulsion of a person named Akash Chowdhury for kicking a woman at a program of the Democratic Students’ Alliance in Chittagong.
