City Reporter: Heavy rains on Monday night (May 26) have caused severe waterlogging in various areas of the city. Many roads are knee-deep in water, and even water has entered homes in low-lying areas. As a result, the common people are suffering greatly.
It was learned that waterlogging has become severe in the city’s Chawkbazar, Baklia, Agrabad, Pathantuli, and Kapasghola areas. Minor accidents have also been reported as potholes on the roads are submerged under water. City residents complain that waterlogging has become a normal thing for Chittagong even after a little rain. Despite the government allocating thousands of crores of taka to resolve waterlogging and changes in officials in various organizations, including the City Corporation and the Chittagong Development Authority, the common people are not getting relief from the grip of waterlogging.
Afsana Begum, a resident of the Kapasghola area, said that the sewage water has entered the house. I quickly lifted my clothes and some important things. I am in great trouble with my children.
Md. Samir Hossain, a resident of the Katalganj area, said that the drainage line in our area seems to be blocked. Every time it rains, the water rises.
It is learned that four major projects worth Tk 16,771 crore are being implemented to solve the problem of waterlogging in Chittagong city. These projects include the re-excavation of canals, the development of drainage systems, the installation of regulators, and the construction of roads. However, the canals and drains under these projects have been lying open for a long time. As a result, sometimes people drown in the drains, and sometimes people die due to electrocution due to waterlogging.
