Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: A huge amount of cement has been seized while being smuggled illegally to Rakhine, Myanmar, by evading customs. During this, 5 smugglers have been arrested by the Coast Guard.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Harun-or-Rashid gave this information on Saturday (May 24) afternoon.
He said that based on a secret tip-off, a special operation was conducted by the Coast Guard Station Cox’s Bazar at 2 am today, Saturday, in the sea area adjacent to Nazirartek, Cox’s Bazar. During the operation, the expedition team gave a signal to a suspicious engine-powered wooden boat to stop, but the boat ignored the signal and tried to flee quickly. Later, the expedition team chased the boat for an hour and arrested it. 5 smugglers, along with 340 sacks of cement in the boat for smuggling to Rakhine State, Myanmar, were arrested.
The arrested smugglers are Momtaz Ahmed (50) of Teknaf, Md. Arafat (30) of Char Fashion, Md. Ibrahim (26) of Patharghata, Barguna, Md. Shukkur (50), and Md. Johar (36), residents of Kutupalong Rohingya Camp.
The process of taking further legal action regarding the seized cement, the arrested smugglers, and the boat used for smuggling is underway.
He further said that the Bangladesh Coast Guard has been patrolling 24 hours to maintain the law and order situation in the country. Through which the law and order situation and prevention of smuggling in the coastal and riverine areas under the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard have improved to a great extent. The Coast Guard will continue such operations in the future to prevent smuggling.
