The Crime Desk: Even though water comes to every house through WASA lines in Narayanganj city, that water has now become a curse. People have fallen ill after using foul-smelling dirty water. Stomach aches, skin diseases, and other complications are increasing. It is very difficult to get clean water in this city.
WASA water is not only unfit for drinking, but it is also a problem to bathe or wash your face with that water. Many have complained that the stench of the water is so strong that the smell lingers on the body even after bathing. Some say that after washing your face, it irritates the eyes and itches the skin. This affects the health of everyone from children to the elderly.
It has been seen on the spot in various areas that although the water seems clear when kept in a white container, WASA water is black, gray, and dirty. Many families are unable to use WASA water even after filtering it. They are forced to bring water from deep tube wells from far away for cooking. In some places, people have to stand in long lines in front of private pumps to collect clean water. Two glasses of clean water are now a ‘financial burden.’ Many families are buying and drinking bottled water. This is costing an average of 800 to 1200 taka per month. In many houses, in addition to the rent, they have to pay a separate charge for water. But the quality of service is not good.
Nasima Kajal Akhter, a housewife from the Galachipa area, said that nothing can be done with WASA water. We have to bring cooking water from the neighboring area, and we buy drinking water. This is increasing the cost of living. This is actually a kind of oppression. We cannot accept paying the bill where we do not get water.
Bashir Mia, the owner of the house, expressed his anger and said, I hear that WASA has increased the price of water again, but no reason has been given for it. Increasing the price without providing service means cheating the consumers.
Although the city corporation has announced the initiative, in reality, the benefits have not yet reached the city residents. Thousands of families in Narayanganj are waiting for pure water. All they want is a glass of clean, odorless, and healthy water. Is that so difficult?
When asked about this, Narayanganj City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Zakir Hossain said, When there is a problem with WASA water, it does not happen everywhere. The problems arise in some places. Wherever we see a problem, we do not take immediate action. We will talk to our water department so that the city residents do not have any problems. The residents of the Narayanganj City Corporation area will see a solution to this soon.
