The Crime Desk: Police have arrested 49 people involved in vandalism of shops and businesses in various cities of the country, including Sylhet. This information was given by the police headquarters on Tuesday morning (April 8).

The Chief Advisor’s Press Wing said last night that police officers have been instructed to arrest those involved in vandalizing shops and businesses in various cities of the country, including Sylhet. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has already instructed the police officers.

IGP Baharul Alam said in a statement, “We have video footage of the attackers. They are being identified and will be arrested soon. Multiple police teams are working in this regard. Besides, the government does not prevent any justified protests. However, no criminal activities will be tolerated under the guise of protest programs.

On Monday afternoon, vandalism was reported at the Cheragi Pahar intersection, SS Khaled Road, Kazir Deuri, Lalkhan Bazar, and GEC intersection in Chittagong city. In addition, vandalism and looting occurred at the showroom of footwear company Bata in Sylhet. Bata claimed that the incident was committed by an Israeli company. Later, Bata issued a statement saying that Bata is not an Israeli-owned company and has no political connection with the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Bata is a privately owned family business worldwide, which started in the Czech Republic.

Students of all educational institutions and ordinary people held a protest march across the country, including the capital, as part of the ‘The World Stops for Gaza’ program to protest the Israeli aggression in Gaza and the brutal killing of Palestinians. Towards the end of the protests, incidents of vandalism and looting occurred in several cities, including Sylhet, Khulna, and Chittagong, including Bata showrooms, signboards of soft drink companies Coca-Cola, Seven Up, and KFC, and several foreign companies.
