City Reporter: A businessman named Nur Mohammad Shahed has alleged that the police are harassing ordinary people in Chittagong for money. He claimed that currently, no businessman, ordinary employee, or laborer is being exempted from police harassment. They are being excluded from cases in exchange for a large sum of money by intimidation.
The victim, Nur Mohammad Shahed, made these allegations at a press conference organized by the Chittagong Metropolitan Journalists Union on Monday. He has filed a case against Sheikh Hasina for attacking the anti-discrimination movement in Chittagong.
Later, the police included him in the list of unknown accused and sent him to jail. He was recently released on bail after serving his sentence.
Nur Mohammad Shahed said at the press conference, “On January 30, I was arrested by the Halishahar Police Station from the Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s office. Later, they called my manager and demanded Tk 1.2 million. The police said that no case would be filed against me if I paid the money. I had to serve 22 days in jail for not paying the money. Not only that, on February 1, I was shown a false arrest warrant as an unknown accused in a case at Doublemooring Police Station. They only found one crime in me, that is, I had pictures of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina in my office. Now what I am saying is, it was mandatory to keep pictures of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina in all government and private institutions. So everyone here is a criminal.
He also said that after the mass uprising, the big raghavbowals of the Awami League are now accused in multiple cases. The police are giving them a chance to escape without catching them. And after arresting innocent people, they are filing cases as unknown accused. Again, if they reach an agreement with the plaintiff, they are dropped from the case. What is the way to get rid of these harassments?
