Angry workers leave Banani Road after 7 hours

The Crime Desk: Garment workers blocked Banani Chairman Bari Road in the capital to express their anger over the death of a colleague in a truck accident. They lifted the blockade around 1:30 pm after about 7 hours.

The blockade caused severe traffic jams in Banani and surrounding areas. The impact of this traffic jam even spread to other parts of the capital. Many people were forced to walk to their destinations due to the traffic jam.

The common people have suffered greatly due to the severe traffic jam.

The number of police personnel in the area was increased around noon. They lined up and stood on the road and formed barricades.

Banani Police Station—Police said that a female garment worker named Mina Akhter was killed when a pickup truck carrying bananas hit her in the Banani Chairman Bari area at 6:41 am today. Workers from various garment factories blocked the road in protest. They took up positions on the road from Kamal Ataturk Avenue in Banani to Amtoli in Mohakhali. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the road.

Police confirmed that the workers left the road after about 7 hours of the blockade. Traffic resumed after the workers left.

Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Russell Sarwar said that the pickup has already been seized by Tejgaon Police Station. The vehicle was seized from Tejgaon bus stand after seeing CCTV footage. However, the driver fled. Efforts are underway to arrest him.
