On Thursday (March 6), around 5 pm, forest department officials rescued the elephant stuck in the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary in the Napora area of the upazila with the help of villagers.
Anisuzzaman Sheikh, an officer (ranger) of the Jaldi Range of the forest department, said, “We received the news of the elephant getting stuck in the mud around 7 pm on Wednesday (March 5), and we started the rescue operation from 8 am on Thursday.”
He said, “First, we cleaned the mud from the elephant’s body by spraying water with a pump. We also softened the mud by spraying water. Later, with the help of at least 35 villagers, we were able to lift the elephant to the shore.”
Anisuzzaman said, “The female elephant is approximately 40 years old. The elephant is suffering from malnutrition. It has become even weaker due to being stuck in the mud.” After the rescue, we fed the elephant saline water. The elephant was unable to stand.
He also said, “We have requested doctors from Dulahazara Safari Park to come. We will go again in the morning when the doctors arrive. If the elephant is found, it will be treated.”
