The Crime Desk: The much-discussed former councilor of Chittagong City Corporation, Zahirul Alam Jasim, has finally been arrested. Multiple sources have said that he surrendered to the police himself in hopes of his cancer-stricken wife’s bail.
A source from the Akbar Shah Police Station said that the Akbar Shah Police Station arrested him from Dhaka late on Wednesday (March 5). Details will be announced on Thursday, the police said.
On February 17, a group of people surrounded the entire building on the news that former councilor Zahirul Alam Jasim was hiding in a residential building in the Akbar Shah Police Station area. After that, the police searched the entire building but did not find Jasim.
But the police arrested Jasim’s cancer-stricken wife from a flat. Multiple sources have said that Jasim surrendered to the police himself to get his wife’s bail after his wife was arrested.
After the Awami League government was ousted on August 5 last year, councilor Zahurul Alam Jasim went into hiding. He has long been accused of cutting down mountains to build roads and other structures in the Akbar Shah area. The Local Government Ministry temporarily suspended him on January 25 this year.
Jasim, joint convener of the North Pahartali Ward Awami League, is the first accused in the case of throwing stones at the car of interim government advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan and threatening her.
