Karnaphuli Correspondent: Police have arrested a man named Ripon Barua with 5,000 packets of illegal foreign cigarettes in Notun Bridge, Chittagong city.
He was arrested from the Gol Chattar area of Notun Bridge under Baklia police station in the city around 8 pm on Wednesday (January 22).
Baklia police station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Ikhtiyar Uddin confirmed the truth of the incident. The arrested Ripon Barua (36). Son of Ranjit Barua of the Baghmara Bazarpara area of Jamchhari Union, Bandarban Sadar.
Baklia police station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Ikhtiyar Uddin said that he was evading government duty and VAT by bringing illegal foreign brand cigarettes and taking them to Riazuddin Bazar for supply.
Based on secret information, a raid was conducted, and 5,000 packets of illegal foreign brand cigarettes were seized. The estimated value of which is 7.5 lakh taka.
Legal action against the accused is under process, Ikhtiyar Uddin said. He said such operations will continue against those involved in illegal business.
