Khagrachari Correspondent: Cultivation of Dutch lilies has started experimentally in Khagrachari. Entrepreneur Sathoai Marma. He has also achieved success. Now, if the experiment of saving the tubers and making seedlings is successful, this entrepreneur is thinking of going into commercial cultivation.
After one and a half months of planting the tubers, sweet-smelling orange lilies have bloomed in Sathoai Marma’s garden. This amateur flower preserver and entrepreneur cultivated lilies with 200 experimental tubers in the Women’s College area of Khagrachari city in collaboration with a private company.
After planting the lily tubers in the first week of November, the flowers have been blooming every day for the past few weeks with regular care. Visitors are fascinated by what they see.
Nursery laborer Umesh Tripura said that he is happy to be able to plant the tubers of two rare flowers himself.
Sathoai Marma said that this flower is the first Asiatic lilium in Bangladesh; their company brought this tuber from the Netherlands. And they have planted it for commercial purposes for the first time in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. This flower has a fragrance.
He hopes to benefit economically by cultivating this flower in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Scientific Officer of the Khagrachari Hill Agricultural Research Center Md. Abdullah Al Malek said, “Lilium cultivation has started on a small scale in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The good news is that two varieties of lilium have been released from the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. One of them is yellow, the other is white. They have been named Bari Lilium-1 and Bari Lilium-2. Which are suitable for cultivation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and by cultivating these flowers, farmers will be able to benefit financially and meet the demand for lilium flowers.”
