Locally Endangered Leopard Cat Rescued in Lohagara

The Crime Desk: An endangered leopard cat has been rescued in Lohagara. On Wednesday (December 18) afternoon, a team from the Wildlife Sanctuary Range rescued the leopard cat from a building under construction in the Chunati Bazar area of ​​the upazila.

It is learned that the leopard cat was spotted in the building under construction and informed the forest department. Later, forest department officials rescued the leopard cat from the spot and brought it to the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary Range.

Range Officer of the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary Range, Mahmud Hossain, said that the habitat of the rescued leopard cat is usually shrubs. There were shrubs next to the building under construction. The animal lost its habitat due to the clearing of them. Despite being an endangered species, leopard cats can be seen in the Chunati Wildlife Sanctuary. This species is protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection and Security) Act, 2012.

He further said that the leopard cat is a small mammal of the Felidae family and is almost the size of a domestic cat. The head-to-body size of this species of cat is 60 to 66 centimeters; the tail is slightly larger than the head-to-body length and weighs about three to four kilograms. The rescued female leopard cat has been sent to the Dulahazara Safari Park. After being kept in quarantine for 14 days, it will be released in a suitable environment.
