Former OC Pradeep’s wife granted bail

The Crime Desk: The High Court has granted bail to Chumki Karan, the wife of suspended Teknaf Police Station OC Pradeep Kumar Das, who was convicted in an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case.

The High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain gave the order on Sunday (December 8).

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented Chumki Karan in the court. Lawyer Asif Hasan represented the ACC.

On August 23, 2020, ACC Assistant Director Md. Riaz Uddin filed a case against Pradeep Kumar and Chumki Karan on charges of acquiring illegal assets.

In the case, Pradeep and Chumki were charged with acquiring assets beyond known income of Tk 3 crore 95 lakh 5 thousand 635, concealing information about assets, and laundering money. After the investigation, some changes were made to the amount of money.

Chumki Karan was absconding from the beginning of the case. However, on May 23, 2022, he surrendered to the court on the last day of testimony. The court ordered him to be sent to prison. Since then, Chumki Karan has been in prison.

On July 27, 2022, the Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Court sentenced Pradeep Kumar to 20 years in prison and his wife Chumki Karan to 21 years in prison in this case.

Chumki later appealed to the High Court. While the appeal was pending, he applied for bail. After the hearing, the High Court granted him bail on Sunday.

Former OC Pradeep Kumar is a death row convict in the murder case of retired army Major Sinha Md. Rashed Khan.

On July 31, 2020, retired Major Sinha Md. Rashed Khan was shot dead at the APBN checkpost in Cox’s Bazar. After the then Teknaf OC Pradeep was arrested and sent to prison, the ACC launched an investigation to find his illegal assets.
