Former MP Safia Khatun arrested

The Crime Desk: Police have arrested Mosa. Safia Khatun (70), a former member of parliament from the reserved women’s seat (Chakaria-Pekua Upazila of Cox’s Bazar) and former central president of the Women’s Awami League, in the case of the murder of Akram Khan Rabbi during the anti-discrimination student movement in Pallabi in the capital. She was arrested from the Balughat area of Pallabi on Saturday night.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of the Media and Public Relations Department of the DMP, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed this information on Sunday (December 1).

He said that on July 19, leaders and activists of various Awami League organizations opened fire on students and the public during the anti-discrimination movement in front of Abul Taleb School in Mirpur-10 of Pallabi Police Station. Akram Khan Rabbi was seriously injured in their gunfire while crossing the road. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with the help of local people, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

In this incident, a murder case was filed at Pallabi Police Station on August 25, following a complaint by victim Akram’s father, Faruk Khan. Initial evidence has been found of the involvement of arrested Safia Khatun in this case.

Police station sources said that Mosa. Safia Khatun was arrested with the help of CCTV footage analysis, intelligence information, and technology in this case under investigation. The arrested accused has been sent to court.
