City Reporter: If 1 percent of Chittagong Port’s income is given as ‘Urban Development Fee’, the City Corporation will be able to play a greater role in the infrastructure development of the city, said Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain.
He said that the roads built by the city corporation play a major role in the transportation of goods at the port. These roads are damaged by the heavy vehicles of the port. A large part of Chasik’s revenue goes to repair the roads. Chasik needs a lot of money to build good roads to keep the port operational. If the port gives 1 percent of revenue to Chasik, Chasik can play a bigger role in the infrastructure sector, which will contribute to the revenue of the country by increasing the capacity of the port.
The comprehensive activities of Chasik, including education and health, cannot be done with the income of only a few sectors, including holding tax. For this purpose, income should be provided from various sectors, including the port. He said these things while talking to Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, chairman of Chittagong Port Authority, who came to pay a courtesy call at the temporary office of Tigerpass Nagar Bhavan on Tuesday. He commented that it is necessary to determine the ‘urban development fee’ for the sake of the city and its residents.
Chittagong Port Authority Chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman said, Polythene is a big threat to the navigability of the Karnaphuli River. Chasik needs to increase its waste management capacity to save Karnaphuli. Waste management requires a holistic action plan.
