The Crime Desk: The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barisal’s Bakerganj Police Station Shafiqul Islam has been withdrawn due to neglect of duty.
Shafiqul Islam was withdrawn (closed) and attached to the Barisal Police Lines on the orders of the Barisal Superintendent of Police on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Police Inspector (Investigation) Golam Mostafa has been given the duty of officer-in-charge. Superintendent of Police Mohammad Belayet Hossain confirmed the matter.
According to police sources, miscreants broke the heads and hands of three idols in the private Durgamandir of Paschim Shyampur Deuri house of the upazila late on Thursday night. Shankar Deuri said that they got up early on Friday and found the heads and hands of three Durga idols broken. The broken heads and hands of these idols were kept down.
Superintendent of Police Mohammad Belayet Hossain said, ‘The whole matter seems mysterious. It cannot be called vandalism. The head was uncovered and placed near the feet. If vandalized, the whole would be damaged. We are thoroughly investigating how this happened. We are investigating and trying to identify the cause. Hopefully, it will work out. After Mahalaya, it was decided to have CCTV cameras and volunteers in the mandapas. He had nothing in that pavilion. In this case, the Mandap authorities did not perform their duties properly.
The Superintendent of Police said that it was the responsibility of the police to monitor whether there are volunteers in the pavilion or not. But Bakerganj police did not fulfill that duty. So OC Shafiqul Islam has been removed from duty and attached to police lines. Inspector Ghulam Mustafa has been given the charge of OC in his place.
