City Reporter: Customs authorities will auction two luxury cars at Chittagong port next Wednesday. One is a Mercedes Benz worth 16 crore tk, and the other is a Land Cruiser worth 5 crore tk.
It is known that it is going to be auctioned, as it has not been redeemed even after importation. Also, 50 items of products will be auctioned for sale.
According to Chittagong Customs sources, these products have published a circular for auction sale. It has two cars and various other imported products. These goods have been imported several times but not redeemed.
As they have not taken redemption despite repeated notifications to the importer, they are going for auction.
Apart from the two cars, the other products to be auctioned include floor tiles, denim fabrics, sodium sulfate, cotton, mango-apple and pineapple juice, and polyester. Among them, the base price of the auction of floor tiles is Tk 1 crore 43 lakh, denim fabrics Tk 1 crore 25 lakh, sodium sulfate Tk 99 lakh, cotton Tk 88 lakh, juice Tk 72 lakh, and polyester Tk 93 lakh. Among the two cars, the auction base price of the Mercedes Benz has been set at Tk 16 crore 10 lakh and the Land Cruiser at Tk 5 crore 17 lakh.
According to sources, the Mercedes Benz was imported in the name of a car marketing company in Baridhara, Dhaka. And the Land Cruiser was imported by late Member of Parliament Ali Ashraf. The former Member of Parliament of Comilla-7 passed away on July 30, 2021.
Secretary of Chittagong Port. Omar Farooq said that after handing over two vehicles to customs for auction, there are still 399 vehicles in the port yard that are up for auction. Apart from this, various types of goods are not released on time after import, causing a space shortage in the port yard.
