The Crime Desk: Awami League is not in the field now due to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Some of the leaders and workers have fled, not in hiding. Others have been detained. So a vacuum has been created in the field of politics. Keeping that in mind, Jamaat, which has been hiding from the political movement for a long time, wants to emerge as a big force. Meanwhile, some leaders of the Jamaat Shibir workers in different parts of Comilla’s Chouddagram have started various extortion trades, including extortion, by exerting influence on their power before the election.
It is known that after the anti-discrimination student movement on August 5, the leaders and activists of Jamaat have violently attacked and looted various areas of Chouddagram. At the same time, they are continuing to take over one after another by showing their muscle power, starting from occupying the CNG stand in the market of different unions, keeping the responsibility of the market committee and mosque and school committee under their control.
Meanwhile, Chauddagram Upazila BNP president. According to Kamrul Huda’s instructions, no information has been found that the BNP leaders and workers have been involved in any kind of disorderly situation and unpleasant incidents since they have been active in the streets for a long time. Like Jamaat-e-Islami, they are moving forward with the mentality of working for the public interest. Locals feel that the hostility of Jamaat BNP will soon become public in Chouddagram.
According to sources, the alliance between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami has been around for 25 years. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in a student uprising, the alliance has become strained. The leaders of the two parties have been taunting each other recently. Taking a contrary position on political issues. BNP is pressuring the interim government to hold elections at the earliest. Jamaat, on the contrary. The Muhammad Yunus-led government is not being pressured. The two parties also have different views on pardoning political opponents. And there is an ongoing conflict over the posting of own people in the civil administration, police, and universities. The dispute between the Chhatra Dal and the Islami Chhatra Shibir regarding consolidation of positions in universities and colleges is also very public. BNP believes that Jamaat is getting more support from the interim government.
However, some leaders of the two parties think that since the Awami League is not in the field, it is necessary to have competition between BNP and Jamaat for the sake of democracy. Or the situation may arise as the Jatiya Party turns into a ‘homegrown opposition party’ of the Awami League.
On the other hand, BNP formed an alliance with Jamaat in 1999 to prevent the Awami League. In 2001, the coalition formed the government. Despite ups and downs in the relationship, the alliance did not break. From 2013 to 2015, BNP and Jamaat organized a joint movement against the then government. Jamaat leaders who lost their registration in the 2018 elections became candidates under the BNP symbol. After the election known as the ‘night vote’, the relationship between the two parties deteriorated. In 2022, the two parties officially broke the alliance and started a simultaneous movement. However, the BNP is not standing by the side; the Jamaat withdrew from the simultaneous movement due to allegations.
