The Crime Desk: All kinds of vegetables are being sold at exorbitant prices in Khulna. Common buyers are bewildered due to a lack of market monitoring. Beans, cauliflower, cabbage, and radish, as well as brinjal, patl, radish, shrimp, and bitter gourd, are in ample supply in the market. But despite having so many spicy vegetables, these vegetables are being sold at a very high price. As a result, even though the supply in the market has increased, the buyers are not getting relief.

The sellers claim that the prices of vegetables have been increasing for the past few months, but they are being sold at slightly lower prices for the past few weeks. As some vegetables are not seasonal, their prices are slightly higher. However, the price of broiler chicken has increased by Tk 10 per kg this week.

As of last week, small-sized gourds are being sold at Tk 70 to Tk 80 a piece. Meanwhile, papaya is being sold at Tk 30 per kg as the cheapest vegetable in the market. In these markets, lemon juice is being sold at Tk 15 to Tk 30, coriander at Tk 350 to Tk 400 per kg. Apart from this, bananas are being sold at 40 taka and sweet pumpkins at 40 to 50 taka per kg. However, raw chillies are being sold at the price of Tk 200 per kg, down by Tk 80 per kg compared to last week.

A buyer named Kamrul Ahsan said, except for a couple of vegetables, the price of all vegetables is above Tk 50 to 60. If the price of vegetables is so high, how can I get relief? We thought the new government would regulate the market properly. But so far, nothing is happening. The market still remains in the hands of syndicates.

He said the market is full of vegetables. But in terms of price, it seems that these are rare species of vegetables. If you buy two or three kinds of vegetables, it will cost more than 100 to 150 taka. There is no way to buy and eat vegetables except fish and meat. Low-income people like us are suffering a lot.

Meanwhile, regarding the price of vegetables, Rafiq, a vegetable seller in the evening market of the city, said that the price of vegetables in the market is relatively low. But the new ones are a bit more expensive. I am selling beans in yesterday’s market at the price of Tk 200 per kg. There were no beans last week. Vegetables of 2 to 4 items, including beans, are currently being sold at slightly higher prices as they are not in season. If these vegetables start growing again, their prices will also decrease.
