The Crime Desk: Advocate Ehsanul Haque Samazi is not joining the post of Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. Two days after he was appointed, he announced that he would not hold the post due to personal and family reasons. In a letter sent to the Solicitor Division of the Department of Law and Justice on Thursday (August 29), he mentioned the reason for not holding the post of PP.
In the letter, he mentioned, ‘Recently, I came to know from various media and other sources that in the correspondence issued by your office, the undersigned has been appointed to the relevant post (Metropolitan Public Prosecutor); for this, I express my gratitude and thanks to all concerned, including the advisor. It is to be noted that as a regular member of the Dhaka Bar Association for almost 38 years, I have been performing my professional duties with honesty and devotion, giving priority to professional dignity. At this time, in the interest of maintaining professional dignity and due to my personal/family reasons, I express my ineligibility to join the subject (Metropolitan Public Prosecutor) post. I am in support of the state reform work and will provide full cooperation in providing legal services as required by the administration and in the future. ‘
On August 27, the Deputy Solicitor of the Department of Law and Justice, Sana MD A letter signed by Mahruf Hossain was sent to the District Magistrate of Dhaka informing about the appointment of Ehsanul Haque Samaj as Public Prosecutor of the new Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. Pro-BNP lawyers protested against his appointment yesterday.
Advocate Samazi was earlier a public prosecutor (PP) in the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court of Dhaka. He has also served as a legal consultant to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)-run National Consultative Organization for the necessary amendments to the existing Criminal Procedure Code in Bangladesh.
Ehsanul Haque Samazi also served as the Metropolitan Public Prosecutor of Dhaka and the Public Prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh during the previous caretaker government during the period 2007-2009. During his tenure, he represented the state/prosecution and handled cases in the criminal courts.
He obtained LLB (honours) in 1984 and LLM in 1985 from Dhaka University. Enrolled as a lawyer on 30 October 1986. On November 4 of that year, he became a member of the Dhaka Bar Association. On April 7, 1988, he was listed in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. On January 21, 1992, he became a member of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
