The Crime Desk: The local government department has removed 493 upazila chairmen of the country. Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) will perform the duties in place of the chairmen.
On Sunday (August 18) a notification has been issued from the local government department
Deputy Secretary, Md. The notification signed by Mahbub Alam said that Upazila executive officers will perform duties in place of the removed chairmen.
Earlier, on August 16, a government information statement informed that the government can remove mayors and councilors of any city corporation and municipality in the public interest if it is considered necessary in special circumstances.
Similarly, the chairman and members of the zilla parishad and the chairman, vice chairman, and female vice chairmen of the upazila parishad can be removed. At the same time, the government can appoint administrators in these.
By making such provisions as ‘Local Government (City Corporations) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘Local Government (Municipalities) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘District Councils (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ and ‘Upazilla Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ has been approved by the Advisory Council of the Interim Government.
