Gazipur Correspondent: 209 inmates escaped after taking the guards hostage during a protest at Kashimpur High Security Jail in Gazipur. On Tuesday afternoon, the prison guards fired to prevent the escape of the prisoner. 6 people were killed. According to prison sources, there are 3 militants among them.
Eyewitnesses said that around noon on Tuesday, some inmates took some prison guards hostage and started a protest demanding their release. The prison guards tried to calm them down but failed. Around 1.30 pm, army personnel came to the jail and brought the situation under control. The relatives of the prisoners took a stand at the gate after hearing about the protest. At one point, the protesters set fire to a warehouse outside the prison. Later, the soldiers chased them and dispersed them.
Kashimpur High Security Central Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala said that from noon on Tuesday, militants and some ordinary prisoners started protest and rebellion in the jail, demanding their release. During this time, many prisoners tried to escape by using the ladder inside and breaking the wall. The prison guards tried to control it and failed. When informed, a few army teams reached the prison by helicopter from Dhaka. Later, the prison guards fired for security reasons. Six people were killed in the shooting. Apart from this, 209 prisoners escaped. The bodies of the deceased were recovered at night and sent to the mortuary of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, Gazipur.
The six deceased are Imtiaz Pavel (24), son of Muqbul Mia of Rameshwapur in Moulvibazar, accused in the murder case; Swapan Sheikh (40), son of Razzak Sheikh of Tartia area of Tangail, accused in the robbery case; and Ayatollah (39), son of Sirajul Islam of Jalosha area of Sunamganj. The accused in the case of the terrorist attack on Holi Artizan is the son of Zakir Hossain of Nalvata area of Narsingdi. Jinnah (28) and Aslam Hossain Mohan, son of Abdus Salam of Kanchanpur area of Naogaon. The other is Afzal Hossain (63), the death-sentenced accused in the Holy Artisan case.
Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala said that additional army personnel have been deployed in Kashimpur Jail since Wednesday morning. Currently, the situation is under control.
In a video that went viral on social media yesterday, inmates are seen escaping from the prison as best they can. Some climb the wall, some climb the ladder to get out. At that time, some prisoners were also seen staying peacefully in a building.
