Minister-MP residence vandalized in Sylhet

The Crime Desk: After the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the post of Prime Minister, there were reports of attacks and vandalism on various government buildings and houses of Awami League leaders in Sylhet on Monday.

A number of Awami League leaders and workers said that immediately after the news of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, a group of people went to the city’s Shapla Bagh area with a procession. There, the residence of Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, State Minister for Expatriate and Foreign Employment and President of Sylhet District Awami League, was vandalized and set on fire.

Separately, some other parties are Azadur Rahman Azad, Councilor of Sylhet City Corporation and Organizing Secretary of Metropolitan Awami League in the East Shaplabag area of the city, Awami League Member of Parliament (MP) Ranjit Chandra Sarkar of Sunamganj-1 (Tahirpur, Jamalganj, Dharmapasha, and Madhyanagar) Constituency located in Gopaltila area and Sylhet. Metropolitan Awami League President Masuk Uddin Ahmad and Vice President Asad Uddin’s residences were attacked and vandalized.

Apart from this, the business establishments of many Awami League-supported businessmen were vandalized and looted in the city. Mahi Uddin Ahmad Selim, Executive Member of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BAFFE) and General Secretary of the Sylhet District Sports Association, has vandalized and looted his business in Maharashtra. It is one of the largest clothing stores in Sylhet. The institute is located in the Nayasarak area of the city.

Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League Vice President Asad Uddin Ahmed admitted the vandalism at his residence. However, the others could not be contacted.

Several eyewitnesses said that the Police Superintendent’s Office of Sylhet, located in the city’s Bandar Bazar area, was set on fire today at around 3 p.m..

Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police to know about attacks, vandalism, and arson. When he called Zakir Hossain Khan’s mobile phone, he hung up. Later, when two top officials of the Metropolitan Police were called on their mobile phones, they did not pick up.

Meanwhile, the students and crowds are marching in Sylhet to express their joy at the news of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and leaving the country. Thousands of people soaked in the rain took part in a victory procession in various streets of the city.
