Police station, food warehouse, land office, and A. League office caught fire; 3 cars were burned

Rajshahi Correspondent: One-party agitators set fire to Rajshahi’s Mohanpur police station, government food warehouse, land office, and Awami League office. At this time, two vehicles of the police and one of the upazila assistant commissioners (land) were burned. Besides, the office of Mohanpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was vandalized.

The agitators carried out this violence at around noon on Sunday (August 4). Around 2.30 pm, the agitators were moving towards Kesarhat Municipality. There was tension. Police and local administration were trying to calm the situation.

According to police and witnesses, the agitators were staying at Ekdiltala Hat, about half a kilometer away from Mohanpur police station, since morning. They crossed the police barrier there and moved towards the upazila headquarters. After that, they first set fire to the party office of the Upazila Awami League. Everything inside the office was burned.

Then they set fire to various buildings and garages in front of the police station. In this, two police cars were burned. The agitators then set fire to the office of the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) next to the police station. Aceland’s car there was burned.

Later, the agitators vandalized the Upazila food warehouse and set it on fire. The UNO office was also vandalized. After that, the agitators moved away from the upazila headquarters and settled in the Kesharhat municipal area.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohanpur police station Haridas Mandal said, “Various structures have been burned in front of our police station. Two police vehicles were also burned. However, the fire did not go inside the police station. And where and what kind of violence has been done, I cannot say yet. We are busy at the police station.

Ayesha Siddika, UNO of Mohanpur, said, “The police station, land office, food warehouse, and party office of the Awami League were set on fire. My office was vandalized too. They are now headed towards the municipality. The situation is very hot. We are trying to control the situation.
