Anti-discrimination student movement: 27 people killed in 10 districts

The Crime Desk: On the first day of the non-cooperation movement of the anti-discrimination student movement, 27 people were killed till noon on Sunday (August 4). Among them, 2 people were killed in Munshiganj, 5 people in Magura, 3 people in Pabna, 3 people in Rangpur, 3 people in Sirajganj, 1 person in Barisal, 3 people were killed in Bhola, 2 people were killed in Bogra, 1 person in Joypurhat, and 5 people were killed in Feni.

Munshiganj: Two people were killed in a three-way clash between police, Awami League and Chhatra League leaders, and activists during the pre-scheduled program of anti-discrimination student movement in Munshiganj. It is said that 30 people were injured, including 7 people who were shot.

The incident took place on Sunday (04 August) in the Super Market and Krishi Bank Mor area of Munshiganj city. At that time, the area turned into a battlefield due to cocktail explosions, firing, and chases.

Abu Hena Mohammad Jamal, supervisor of Munshiganj General Hospital, confirmed the fact that two people died due to gunshot wounds.

Magura: District Chhatra Dal joint general secretary Rabbi was shot dead in a clash with the police in Magura. Besides, 4 people have been killed in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura.

The incident took place in the Parnananduali area of the city at around 11 o’clock on Sunday (04 August). District BNP leader Advocate Mizanur Rahman confirmed this information about the death of the rabbi.

Rangpur: Three people were killed in a clash between two sides in Rangpur. The incident took place at Rangpur Payra Chatwar on Sunday (04 August) around 12:30 PM. The deceased are Masum, Khairul Islam Khosru, Parshuram Thana Awami League President, and Rasik Ward No. 4 Councilor Haradhan Roy. Earlier, protests started across the city around 11 a.m. Both sides took positions in different areas of the city.

Pabna: Three students were killed in firing in Pabna on the first day of the all-out non-cooperation movement called by the anti-discrimination student movement. The accident took place on Sunday (04 August) during the protest at the traffic intersection of A Hamid Road in the city.

Assistant Director of Pabna Sadar Hospital, Dr. Rafiqul Islam, confirmed this. The deceased are Mahibul (16), Zahid (19), and Fahim.

Eyewitnesses said that in the morning, the agitators took a protest march from Pabna Edward College and took a stand at the traffic junction of the city. At that time, shots were fired at them. Three people died on the spot. They were taken to Sadar Hospital. Later, the agitators started protesting in front of Sadar Hospital.

Assistant Director of the Hospital Assistant Director Dr. Rafiqul Islam said that three people who were shot dead were brought to the hospital. Two of them have been identified.

Sirajganj: In Sirajganj, the anti-discrimination quota students occupied all the city routes. District BNP and Jamaat leaders joined them. Meanwhile, three people were shot dead in the city’s SS Road in the clash. They are Jubo Dal leader Ranju (40), Chhatra Dal leader Suman (30), and Jubo Dal worker Abdul Latib (42).

The agitators clashed with Awami League leaders and workers on Sunday (August 4) morning. A chase took place for several hours. At that time, the city’s Bazar Station, SS Road, and Mujib Road turned into a battlefield.

A youth was reportedly shot dead in the encounter. His identity is unknown. Apart from this, 14 people were reported injured, including 7 shot.

At one stage of the conflict, when the Awami League leaders and activists retreated, the protesting students and BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists occupied the entire city. At this time, the Dr. House of Jannat Ara Henry, district Awami League office, house of former MP Habibe Millat Munna, and house of Awami leader Bimal Kumar Das were vandalized and set on fire.

Apart from this, various public and private buildings of the city, including the District Judge Court, Aceland Office, Mukti Sopan Memorial, and Shilpakala Academy, were vandalized and set on fire.

Meanwhile, Chayan Islam MP’s house was vandalized in Shahjadpur of Sirajganj. Belkuchi and Ullapara Awami League offices were set on fire.

Superintendent of Sirajganj 250-bed Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital. Ratan Kumar said that 14 people have been admitted to the hospital so far. 7 of them were shot.

Sirajul Islam, OC of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station, told Kalbela, “We have heard the news of three deaths.” But I could not be sure.

Barisal: During the attack on the house of Minister of State for Water Resources Zahid Farooq in Barisal, there was a clash between A.League leaders and activists. At that time, Tutul Chowdhury, the former president of Awami League Ward No. 12, was killed by the agitators. Later, the agitators set fire to 11 motorcycles in front of State Minister Zahid Farooq’s house.

Bhola: Three people were killed in firing by security forces in Bhola’s new market. Among the dead, an umbrella worker named Jasim Uddin (70) has been identified, but the identities of the two others have not been found. Their age is said to be between 20 and 22 years. This incident happened around 1 pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, two policemen were seriously injured in the attack by the agitators. Later, the agitators vandalized the A. League office, Sramik League office, and municipality and set two cars on fire. At that time, they also set fire to two cars of the DC office.

Bogra: One person was killed in a chase and clash between the Awami League and the police with supporters of the non-cooperation movement in Bogra. Several people were injured.

The casualty happened at Satmatha in Bogra on Sunday (04 August). Meanwhile, the agitators set fire to the Bogra TNT office, the Awami League, the Student Union and Jasad office, the Town Club, the Sadar Bhumi office, and the personal office of the Awami League leader.

Meanwhile, the Satmatha area in the center of the city turned into a battlefield with the explosion of cocktails and the sound of police tear-cells, rubber bullets, and sound grenades on top of the agitators and Awami League workers. Apart from this, the entire city was engulfed in smoke due to setting fire to various structures.

Jaipurhat: A person named Mehdi Hasan was killed in clashes on the first day of the anti-discrimination student movement in Jaipurhat. At least 70 people were reported injured in this incident. The injured have been admitted to Joypurhat 250 General Hospital.

The casualty happened on Sunday (August 4) at noon.

It is known that the agitators left the protest march and vandalized and set fire to the district Awami League party office. At that time, Member of Parliament Samchul Alam Dudu, District Awami League Vice President Raja Chowdhury, Mir Moazzem, Mahmud Hossain Himu—at least 10–12 people were injured. They were rescued and admitted to the 250-bed General Hospital, Joypurhat.

Feni: Five agitators were killed in a clash between the Jubo League and Chhatra League with supporters of the non-cooperation movement in Feni. The incident took place at the Feni Mohipal area of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway around 2 pm on Sunday (August 4). The names and identities of the victims were not immediately known.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Feni 250-bed General Hospital, Dr. Asif Iqbal, confirmed the matter yesterday.
