The Crime Desk: A 10 kg dead carp mother fish has floated in the Halda river, the only natural fish breeding ground in the country. The dead fish was recovered from the Bakar Ali Chowdhury Ghat area of Ward No. 4 of Urkirchar Union of Raujan Upazila at 7 a.m. today. The fish is then buried. Locals said that a Katla mother fish weighing 12 kg was found dead in the last few days.

In this regard, Halda researcher and Chittagong Cantonment Public College Biology Department Head Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam said the health system of the Halda River is facing a severe threat due to man-made destructive activities.

Poultry, household, human waste, industries, etc. toxic waste materials in solid and liquid form are constantly falling into the Halda River from different sources through branch canals. In this way, various physico-chemical properties of water in the aquatic ecosystem of the Halda River are changing and polluting the aquatic environment of Halda.

Due to which, a dead dolphin weighing 88 kg and 89 grams was recovered from the Gadduara area of Hathazari in the Halda river on Tuesday, and a dead fish weighing 10 kg was recovered from Urkirchar in the Raujan part of Halda today. Thus, the death of dolphins and fish is ominous for the Halda ecosystem. To make the Halda ecosystem a safe habitat for fish and dolphins, everyone should work together with the administration to stop various destructive activities, including pollution.

Raujan Upazila Fisheries Extension Officer Abdullah Al Mamun said that due to the smell of rotting fish, soil has been buried through Kauchar Alam, a UP member of Ward No. 4 of Urkirchar Union Parishad.
