CU Correspondent: A Chhatra League worker named Mohammad Jewel was arrested at the Zero Point Gate on his way to sell the two grills of Chittagong University (CU) Shahjalal Hall Jalana with the help of autorickshaws. He was apprehended by officers on duty at the Zeropoint gate around 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 20. He was later released on bond by the proctoral body.
The arrested Chhatra League worker is a student in the 17–18 session of the banking and insurance department. Jewel is a follower of 69, based on the BCL compartment on the campus. He was co-editor of the defunct committee.
After investigation, it is known that Mohammad Jewel has been involved in extortion on campus for a long time. Jewel collects a toll if any vehicle enters the campus. Besides, he used to extort money even if a stranger detained them on campus. His classmates said that he committed these crimes mainly for drug money.
The detained student said to the administration, “I mistakenly stopped two grills of the abandoned windows for selling auto-rickshaws at the zero-point gate on the way out of Shahjalal Hall and promised not to do such things in the future when Mr. Proctor was present.” In the future, I will accept the action taken by the police administration and the university authorities.
Proctor Prof. Ahidul Alam was contacted on the phone and got no response. Assistant Proctor Mohammad Rifat Rahman said, I was not at the scene; Proctor Sir was. Detained students are from my department. He vowed not to do such things again. We have heard about his further complaints; action will be taken on these.
In this regard, Sixty Nine’s leader and former organizing secretary, Partha Pratim Barua, said, “I am actually not aware of his previous complaint.” I heard about it today (Thursday). We will take action in this regard.
