City Reporter: A 5-story building has collapsed in the Chandgaon area of the city. The building leans about a foot and a half and clings to the neighboring building. However, the Chittagong Development Authority, police, or fire service have not received any complaints regarding the incident. Nine families live in the building. They told reporters that they were in danger and in fear.
The ‘Navaratna’ building adjacent to the Buddhist temple in Signal Barua Paras under Chandgaon police station collapsed. However, it has been lying for about two months, residents of the building said. About 14 years ago, nine individuals bought the land, built the building, and are living there. Some of the building owners said that the building owned by Pradeep Barua, Bobin Barua, Mission Barua, Bikash Barua, Shikha Barua, Sumi Barua, Manju Barua, Minu Barua, and Jisu Barua admitted that it was leaning, but no engineer showed it. The building’s caretaker says the building has remained the same for years. It is believed that the building was damaged by an earthquake, and numerous small cracks appeared in its front wall.
The Navaratna building leans against the expatriate Suman Barua’s building next door. There is fear among the families living in Suman Barua’s building. They fear that if the building collapses further, their building will also be damaged.
Chittagong Development Authority, Chandgaon Thana Police, and Kalurghat Fire Service were contacted, but they did not receive any complaints, officials said. However, if complaints are received, necessary measures will be taken by inspecting the land, they said.
