Dhaka Bureau: Internationally renowned nuclear scientist Dr. MA Wazed Mia’s 15th death anniversary is today. The scientist, who had an illustrious career, passed away on May 9, 2009. He is the husband of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On February 16, 1942, Fatehpur village of Laldighi was in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. MA Wazed Mia was born. He was the youngest of four sons and three daughters of father Abdul Quader Mia and mother Moezunnessa.
Wazed Mia stood second in the first class in the Physics Department of Dhaka University in 1961 and first in the first class in the post-graduate examination in 1962. While studying at Dhaka University, he was a resident student of Fazlul Haque Hall. Hall was elected as the Vice President of the Student Council for the academic year 1961–62 as a candidate of the Chhatra League. In 1962, he was arrested while protesting against the Education Commission. On April 1, 1963, he joined the service of the then-Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. In the academic year 1963–64, he completed the ‘Diploma of Imperial College Course’ at Imperial College, London, with merit. In September 1967, after receiving a doctorate degree in physics from Durham University in the UK, he was posted as a senior scientific officer at the Molecular Energy Research Center in Dhaka.
