Joypurhat Correspondent: A defendant named Hafizar fainted in court after hearing the death sentence. In the case of killing van driver Abu Salam (20) for a van in Kalai Upazila of Joypurhat, the court awarded a death sentence to three persons and fined them Tk 50,000 each.

Two defendants were present in court when the verdict was announced. The court ordered the execution of the death penalty by hanging till death. The accused fainted after hearing the verdict. He was later admitted to the hospital.

Joypurhat Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Add. Nripendranath Mondal said that those who received the death sentence are Harun Or Rashid, son of Jahangir Hossain, son of Moslem Uddin, and Hafizar Rahman, son of Jasim Uddin, of Awrah village in Kalai Upazila of Joypurhat district. Haroon Or Rashid, the mastermind of the murder, was absent from the court when the verdict was pronounced.

According to the case and court sources, after the evening of January 12, 2005, the convicted convicts hired Abu Salam’s van and went to Kalai from Durgadah Bazar in Joypurhat Sadar. After strangling Abu Salam to death as planned, a man from Awrah village in Kalai Municipality hid in an old grave in the family graveyard of Amjad Hussain and escaped with a van. The next day, after receiving the information, the police recovered the body from the spot and sent it to the morgue.

In this regard, the then-OC Mirza of Kalai police station. Shahjahan filed a suit as plaintiff. The investigation officer of the case, Kalai Thana police sub-inspector A. Sattar, filed a chargesheet against the accused in court on July 9, 2005. The charge sheet mentions that the death row accused killed the van driver Abu Salam in connivance with each other just to take the van. Later, they sold the van for 2 thousand rupees and divided the money themselves.

After the testimony of seven people in the case, the court gave a verdict by awarding the death sentence and a fine of 50 thousand taka to each of the three in the murder case of van driver Abu Salam in Kalai upazila. Hearing the verdict, Hafizar Rahman fainted in the courtroom. At that time, court police members quickly rescued him and made arrangements to admit him to the 250-bed General Hospital in Joypurhat, said police inspector Abu Siddique.

The case was handled by Adv. Nripendranath Sandal PP and APP. Gokul Chandra Mandal, Shamimul Imam Shamim, Khwaja Shamsul Islam Bulbul, and the accused conducted the case. Ahsan Habib Chapal and Shahinur Reza Shanu.
