Wild elephants attack localities in Burma, killing and injuring 1

Chandnaish Correspondent: A group of wild elephants crossed the Sangu River and attacked the locality in the Barma Bainzuri area of Chandnaish upazila. One person was killed and another injured in this attack. The injured person was rescued and admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

The incident took place on Monday (April 15) morning in Ward No. 6 Madhyam Bainjuri and Ward No. 5 Shebandi area of Barma Union, located next to Barma College of the upazila.
The deceased is Zakir Hossain (65), son of deceased Abdur Razzak of the Isa Khan doctor’s house in Bainjuri village. The injured person is Mohammad Nazrul Islam, son of Shebandi Village Nurul Islam Chairman Bari. Salahuddin (40).

According to eyewitnesses, two elephants came from the east side of Barma College Gate and attacked the deceased Zakir Hossain while he was going to harvest crops. Zakir died on the spot when he turned back and stepped on the elephant’s trunk. After that, a group of elephants attacked a young man named Salahuddin from the Shebandi area and seriously injured him when he was passing through the local road in search of food. He was rescued and admitted to the hospital for treatment.

After receiving the news of the incident, the Upazila administration gave 20,000 taka to the family of the deceased and 10,000 taka to the family of the injured in front of the locals. Upazila Executive Officer Mahmuda Begum, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Abdullah Al Erfan, Burma UP Chairman Khorshed Alam Titu, Upazila Project Officer Riyad Hossain, Patia Range Officer Noore Alam Hafiz, UP member Nowsha Mia, and local journalists were present, among others. Notable people in the area.

At present, wild elephants have become another name of fear for the people of the 4 upazilas of Chandanish, Satkania, Anwara, and Banshkhali in Chittagong. Residents are expressing fear that the number of fallow lands will increase due to the increase in elephant infestation.

Executive Officer Mahmuda Begum said, after receiving the call from the UP Chairman, Patia Range Officer, Health Officer, and Project Officer attended the spot and conveyed their condolences to the families. Directed the THO to issue the death certificate on the spot and the officer-in-charge of Chandanish Police Station to receive the GD.

He said that by preparing an application according to the policy with a copy of the death certificate and GD, the Patia range officer has been instructed to take the necessary measures to quickly pay compensation of 3 lakh rupees to the family of the deceased and 1 lakh rupees to the family of the injured.
