Pirojpur Correspondent: The satellite-tagged crocodile is currently in the small river of Indurkani, 20 km north of the Tuskhali estuary of the Baleshwar river in Pirojpur. Sometimes it is located in the river near Charkhali Ferry Ghat and Nadmula in Bhandaria Upazila. It fluctuates with the tides.
IUCN Program Manager Sarwar Alam Dipu confirmed this information on Saturday, March 30.
He said satellite tags have been attached to crocodiles and released for detailed research on where and how the Sundarbans crocodiles roam. The crocodile is now located in a small river (the Indurkanir River) to the north-left of its former location. I hope it will go back to the Sundarbans again.
The IUCN program manager urged the crocodile not to be harmed and said that if the crocodile is caught in fishermen’s nets or caught somewhere, it should be immediately informed to the forest department without harming it. He said that if the crocodile dies during the research work, their work will be disrupted.
It has been reported that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released four saltwater crocodiles at Harbaria Point in the Sundarbans on March 16 after placing satellite tags on their backs to track their behavior and movements. One of them reached the Baleshwar river in the Tushkhali area of Pirojpur on March 27 through the Mangla-Ghshiakhali channel. Later, the crocodile changed its location two days ago, and now it is staying in the small river of Indurkani, 20 km north of the Tuskhali estuary of the Baleshwar river in Pirojpur, and sometimes in the river near Charkhali Ferighat and Nadmula in Bhandaria upazila.
In response to the news of the arrival of the crocodile, the residents of the local river bank are in a panic. Sarwar Alam Dipu said that it is a small crocodile. It is so small that it cannot harm anyone. The riverside people have nothing to worry about. Rather, we are worried that the crocodile may not get entangled in the fishermen’s net.
He also said, Is there any guarantee that there are so many crocodiles in the Sundarbans? Two of them are not in that river. So he requested that the residents of the river banks take care of the crocodile without panicking.
