King of Bhutan in Dhaka

Dhaka Bureau: King Jigme Khesar Namguel Wangchuck of Bhutan has arrived in Dhaka on a four-day state visit. He arrived in Dhaka around 10 a.m. on Monday (March 25). President Md. He was received as a state guest at Sahabuddin Shahjalal International Airport. Three new MoUs will be signed during his visit.

This is the first visit of a head of state to Bangladesh after the formation of the government in the new term of the Awami League. During the visit, the King of Bhutan will participate in the Independence Day and National Day of Bangladesh and hold meetings with the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister.

This information was given by Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud.

He said that the King of the neighboring country will meet the Prime Minister in the afternoon. At this time, bilateral issues will be discussed. In which importance will be given to the health sector, ICT sector, and tourism sector, increasing bilateral trade and investment through the establishment of a special economic zone in Kurigram, transit agreement, and proposal of tripartite cooperation in the production and exchange of hydropower with India in the power sector.

The Foreign Minister said that three new MoUs will be signed with Bhutan. They are the establishment of a burn and plastic surgery unit in Thimphu, Bhutan; the establishment of a Special Economic Zone for Bhutan in Kurigram; and technical cooperation in consumer protection. Apart from this, the existing agreement on cultural cooperation will be renewed, said Hasan Mahmud.

The foreign minister said that the Bangladesh government will give some gifts to the country during the visit of the King of Bhutan. From next year, the number of seats allotted to Bhutanese students in MBBS courses in government medical colleges in Bangladesh will increase from 22 to 30.

Apart from this, two seats will be allocated for training at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy for Bhutanese Foreign Service Officers every year. Apart from this, the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy will provide necessary technical assistance in establishing a diplomatic training center in Bhutan. Besides, the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council will provide three-year training to Bhutanese agricultural officers for different periods.
