Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: Border tension prevailed after two-to-three weeks of conflict between the country’s junta forces and rebels in Myanmar’s Rakhine. Later, the situation seemed to be somewhat calm, but the Teknaf border was shaken by the incident of shelling again.
On Friday (February 16) in Shahpari Island, Teknaf, in the morning and at night across the St. Martin border, local residents said that the sound of gunfire made it difficult for people to sleep.
Hanif Azad, a resident of Shahpari Island, said that from Thursday night to 7 a.m. on Friday, intermittent gunfire was heard across the border of Shahpari Island. A few of them shuddered with loud noises. Before this, the situation at the Ghumdhum-Ukhia and Teknaf borders was somewhat calm.
He also said that there is a renewed fear of shelling across the border of Shahpari Island and St. Martin Island. As far as I know, the shelling is going on in the area near Maungdoo City in Rakhine State.
Chairman of St. Martin’s Union Parishad Mujibur Rahman said that yesterday night the locals heard some loud noises across our border inside Myanmar. As far as I know, Megichong, Kadirbil, Nurullahpara, Mangala, and Phadongcha areas are located in the vicinity of Maungdoo city. There are several camps of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) in these areas.
BGB Teknaf battalion commander Lt. Col. Mohiuddin Ahmed said that due to internal problems in Myanmar, BGB patrols on the border have been strengthened after receiving reports of intermittent firing between the two groups.
