Human chain demanding closure of illegal brick kilns in Lohagara

Own Correspondent: Local people protested to demand the closure of brick kiln named SBM in Dhalibila area of Padua Union in Lohagara of South Chittagong. Later, the people participating in the human chain marched in protest. The human chain and protest march was held on Friday, January 26, around 2:30 p.m. Eminent person Chowdhury Md. Saleh, former UP member Ferdous Ahmed, Maulana Md. Shahid Ullah, Faridul Haque Hiru etc. spoke in the standard-setting program. At least 400 people participated in this human chain and protest march organized by local residents.

Speakers said that there are Dhalibila Government Primary School, Shah Majidiya Dakhil Madrasah and Dhalibila Mainul Uloom Ebtedayi Madrasa in the brickyard area. Boro crops are being cultivated around the brick kiln. On the northern side of the stream there is a forest garden. The speakers also said that the legal battle against the brick kiln has been going on for a long time. The owners have recently started production at the brickyard in defiance of the High Court order.

Khorshed Alam, the owner of the brick kiln, said that production has started in SBM kiln in the same way as other brick kilns in the country. Application for license has been made to concerned higher authorities. They have clearance from local forest department, agriculture department and health department. There is also the clearance certificate of former Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ahsan Habir Jitu.
