Dhaka Bureau: Citizens for Good Governance (Sujan) said that the number of businessmen and millionaire MPs has increased in the 12th National Parliament compared to the 11th National Parliament.

The organization said that about 67 percent of the winners in the recently concluded 12th National Assembly elections are businessmen, and about 90 percent are millionaires.

Dilip Kumar Sarkar, Central Coordinator of Citizens for Good Governance (SUJAN), presented this information in a virtual press conference on Tuesday (January 23). It is said by the organization that this information has been reported by analyzing the affidavits of the winning parliament members in the recently concluded elections.

It was informed in the press conference that 200 of the 299 elected members of Parliament are businessmen. As a percentage, 66.89 percent of parliament members are businessmen. 185 people, or 61.66 percent of the total parliamentarians, were businessmen in the 11th National Parliament.

According to the report, 193 of these MPs have a wealth of more than five crore rupees. In addition, 269 people have assets worth more than 1 crore rupees, which is 89.97 percent. In the 11th National Parliament, the number of millionaire parliamentarians was 247, or 82.33 percent.

However, compared to the 11th parliament, the number of highly educated parliamentarians has also increased slightly this time. 82.60 percent of this year’s parliamentarians have completed graduation or post-graduation. In XI, this rate was 81 percent.

Sujan editor Badiul Alam Majumdar said that the main basis of all information is the affidavit given by the candidates. But the Election Commission does not verify the information in the affidavit. Affidavits often contain false and misleading information. The purpose for which the court compelled the candidates to furnish information in the affidavit is not being served.
